Matthew 4:18-22
Discussion Questions:
LORD'S PRAYER:
One day as Jesus was standing by the lake people started to crowd around him to listen to the word of God. He saw two boats on the shore left by fishermen who were washing their nets after a long night of fishing. He got into Peter's boat and told him to take his boat out into the deep water and put down his nets so he could catch some fish. Peter said to Jesus, "Master, we have been working hard all night and haven't caught anything but because You say so, we will let down the nets." The fishermen did as Jesus told them to do and they caught so many fish their nets began to break! Both of the boats were so full of fish that they began to sink! Jesus said, "From now on you will be fishers of men." Jesus meant that every time they told people about Him, the Holy Spirit would save people by making them trust in Jesus too. You too are fishers of men!
Discussion Questions:
1. Where was Jesus walking? (Sea of Galilee.)
2. Jesus saw two brothers, Peter and his brother Andrew. What kind of jobs did they have? (They were
throwing nets into the water. They were fishermen.)
3. Jesus told Peter and Andrew to follow Him and he would make them fishers of what? (Men.)
4. How could Jesus make them fishers of men? (Jesus wanted them to help Him tell people about God.)
5. Going from there, Jesus saw two other brothers fishing with their father, what were their names?
(James and John.)
6. Jesus called James and John to follow Him. How long did the brothers wait before deciding to follow Jesus?
(They followed Him immediately.)
GO FISH GAME
Preparation:
Print two copies of the Card sheet onto medium card stock paper and cut out each card. The cards last longer if you laminate them. Six small children can play a game of "Go Fish" with a set of cards
What you will do:
Before starting select six children to play the game, if more than six children are in the class you can have them take turns playing or print additional card sets. Mix up the cards and give each child three cards. If any children have a match they can put the matching cards down in front of them. The children will take turns asking each other if they have a particular card. (Cards include: Jesus, Bible, World, Boat, Fishing Pole, Fishing Net, People, Water and Fish) If the child has the card asked for they must give the card to the child that asked for it. When a child successfully matches a pair of cards, they will place the cards in front of them. The first child without any cards wins the game.
Once the card game is over and if time permits, use several of the cards to tell the story of how Jesus used fishermen to reach the world with the good news.
SNACK:
Goldfish Crackers and Juice Box. For additional fun we could add in some gummy worms (fish bait).
