Discussion Questions:
1. What was the rich young man asking Jesus? (How he might obtain eternal life, or how to get into Heaven.)
1. What was the rich young man asking Jesus? (How he might obtain eternal life, or how to get into Heaven.)
2. What was Jesus' reply? (Obey the commandments.)
3. The rich young man stated that he had kept the commandments, did this fool Jesus? (No, Jesus knows that all men sin and thus break the commandments. No man is prefect, although it appears that this rich young man thought he was.)
4. How did Jesus answer the rich young man? (If you want to be perfect, go and sell your possessions and give it to the poor, then you will have treasure in Heaven. Then come, follow me.)
5. Why do you think Jesus told the rich young man to sell all of his possessions? (Jesus knew that the rich young man valued his possessions more than he valued God.)
6. Why do you think Jesus said it is hard for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven? (People with great wealth can easily begin to let their riches take the place of God.)
7. Does this mean that having wealth or owning things is evil? (No, we just have to ensure that we use our wealth and possessions in the right manner and that we don't allow them to take the place of God.)
TREASURE HUNT GAME
Before class obtain pictures that relate to your lesson. You can print pictures at home, using software designed to make greeting cards. You can also find pictures in magazines or hand draw the pictures. Hide these pictures around the room before the children arrive. It's a good idea to count the pictures first, to make sure that all of them are found. This game is a good icebreaker for children who don't know each other.
Once the children find all the pictures, you can explain how each picture relates to the lesson. You should also mention that the greatest treasure hunt of all is putting God's word into our hearts. This would be the prefect way to transition to scripture reading or memory work.
