Sunday School: 9/29/13

The Love of Money is the Root to Evil

TOPICS:
Through this lesson children will learn that we must always realize from whom our blessings flow, and place our hope solely on God. We should enjoy the blessings God provides, but not pursue them for their own sakes.

OPENING MUSIC:
Angela Zoltek will lead the opening music

The Doxology
Praise God from whom all blessings flow,
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, you heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost

CHASING MONEY
Tie a dollar bill to a length of fishing line.   Play with the children by pulling it away from them each time they try to pick it up.

STORY:
1 Timothy 6:6-10
Read the passages to the children.
Discussion Questions:
1. What does 1 Timothy 6:6 say is great gain? (Godliness with contentment.)
2. What should we be content with? (The simple things in life, like food and clothing.)
3. We brought nothing into the world when we were born, what can we take out of the world when we die? (Nothing - 1 Timothy 6:7.)
4. What does the Bible say happens to people that focus on just getting rich? (They fall into temptation, and a trap, and into many foolish and harmful desires.)
5. What is the end result of these foolish and harmful desires? (Men plunge into ruin and destruction.)
6. What is a root of all kinds of evil? (A love of money.)
7. What does the Bible say some people have done because they were eager for money? (Wandered from their faith in God and pierced themselves with many griefs.)
LOVE OF MONEY
Begin the object talk by flipping the coin into the air and catching it several times. Ask the children the following question, "How many of you think this small coin could block my view of all the stars in the sky on a clear night? You may think it is impossible for such a small coin to block my view of something as large as the night sky, but it can."
Close one eye and hold the coin up directly in front of your open eye. Say, "If this small coin is placed in just the right spot, it will be the only thing I will be able to see."
Our love of material possessions can blind us in much the same way. If the love of money and acquiring wealth become our only focus, this desire will soon eclipse or overshadow everything else in our lives, leaving us spiritually bankrupt.

CRAFT:
We will paint flowers to remember to be thankful for God's many blessings.

LORD'S PRAYER:
The children learn the Lord's prayer
